The native plants and grasses in these areas are adapted to grow at the edge of woodlands and in Oak Savannas.
Oak Savannas existed throughout Illinois in the past. They were open groves of Oaks on bluffs and ravines breaking up the otherwise expansive prairies. These plants work well in the increasing shade of our older residential areas and on the north side of buildings.
