Urban Ecology in a parking lot
Green Guerrilla designed and installed a native plant landscape for Food for Greater Elgin’s new parking lot. Strategic placement and selection of different native oak trees will add to the areas urban canopy, mitigate any heat island effect and promote biodiversity. The hedge rows of dogwoods will provide privacy and food for birds and pollinators alike. Finally, the No-Mow grass will reduce the need for watering, mowing and herbicide.
- Oaks are ecological powerhouses. They support diverse wildlife, including birds, mammals, and insects.
- Gray dogwoods (Cornus racemosa) thrive in urban environments and can be found throughout the Chicago region.
- In winter, the dogwood’s reddish-purple leaves and bright red stems add visual appeal.
This Eco-Friendly landscape design by Green Guerrilla reduces water consumption, emissions, run-off pollution and herbicide applications used in tradition turf maintenance. While promoting bio-diversity through creating habitat for hundreds of local and migratory species.
